The First Professional Cycling Team Of Nigeria Will Compete In The World Championships Under The Sponsorship Of Access Bank & Cocoon Bank

Team Access-Cocoon, Nigeria's first professional cycling team, is working around the clock to ensure the club is ready to compete in the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Continental Circuit in 2020, according to its promoters.

This year, the squad will compete as an elite team before registering with the UCI for the 2020 season. According to the team's promoters, the team is the product of several years of investment, training, and collaboration with a variety of local and international businesses and people, including Velocare, Eterna-Castrol and Craneburg Construction as sponsors.

The Sustainable Cycling Foundation (SCF) and Cycology Riding Club (Cycology) are promoting Team Access Cocoon as part of their continuing grassroots cycling development in Nigeria. SCF has proved successful in the promotion of cycling at the grassroots level, and they realize the tremendous opportunity as well as the challenges as stated by SCF Chairman Faiz Imam recently about the team's ambitions.

He further adds ‘We are positive in our capacity to win because of the expertise of partners like TAR, who have been included in the development of cycling in a number of Sub-Saharan African countries. It seeks to join the likes of Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, TEG Pro Cycling (South Africa), and Team Benediction Cycling, which further has continental cycling clubs (Rwanda).

We are very satisfied with what they have achieved over the last decade, and we are certain that, with their action, they can support Team Access-Cocoon to accomplish its goals while encouraging the future generation of Nigerian cyclists,’ he said. SCF and Cycology hand-picked the athletes and staff of Team Access-Cocoon from a pool of talent in their respective countries.

Nigerian cyclists have a lot of potential, especially in track and criterium, and we've set a five-year goal to transform the continental squad into a world tour team. ‘It is truly a culmination of our shared ambition to promote grassroots cycling by finding individuals who can compete at the world level,’ stated Cycology Captain Bimpe Olufemi.

The team further highlights Innocent Emmanuel and Preye John Dede. They are two juvenile cyclists with a notable worldwide reputation. Nigeria’s first Ironman Triathlete was honoured by Imam as Miebakka “Blacky” Aggo. They have achieved the status of professional Time Trial cyclist. Eye Effiok is again one of the leading cyclists in Team Access-Cocoon’s squad. Victories were recorded by them at the several regional African races and the Nigerian National Championship.

This objective appears much more realistic now than when the concept was initially defined in 2011,’ says Team Access-Cocoon, which joins a growing number of UCI teams backed by major corporations.

Access Bank is committed to providing the most accurate account of this storey. They are doing it in music, the arts, cinema, fashion, and sports, all of which are highly significant to popular culture in this country. This is demonstrated through their annual support of the Lagos City Marathon. ‘African sports and culture have a very bright future,’ says Amaechi Okobi, Group Head of Communications at Access Bank, of the bank's dedication to the sponsorship.

Sports, which embody the vigour of life, are an essential prescription for everyday growth and sustainability. ‘We are excited to be sponsoring this performance since cycling reminds us of the revolution and progress of everyday survival, which drives us from one place to another,’ again added by the sponsors.

Farouk Imam, Managing Director of Cocoon Homes, believes the construction ‘is a major stride in the history of Nigerian sports, and we are happy to be a part of it. Team Access-good Cocoon's influence will undoubtedly cut across all barriers to unite Africans in our goal of a leading, healthy, and thriving nation and continent.’ The programme gives another chance for Cocoon Homes, a real estate development firm, to reduce the socioeconomic divide in Nigeria while encouraging healthy lives through cycling.
